South Wales based charity Follow Your Dreams recently held a Sports Skills Workshop at Llandarcy Academy of Sport in Neath for 27 children from local special school, Ysgol Hendre.

The event was organised and run by sports students from Neath Port Talbot College and participants on the Young Ambassadors Cymru project aged between 16 and 18. The aim was to offer the children the opportunity to use Llandarcy Academy of Sport’s fantastic facilities and learn sports skills with the help of the students.

“As the children arrived we presented them with their own Follow Your Dreams Kit Bag and T-shirt before they got straight into the warm-up activities.” Says Liz Whitaker of Follow Your Dreams. “The students had planned a brilliant range of activities for the pupils, from javelin throwing to dodgeball and penalty shootouts. They helped them to have a great time competing with their classmates whilst also learning some new techniques.”

The day was rounded off with a visit from three professional cricketers including former England bowler and 2005 Ashes winner Simon Jones. He gave the pupils some wise and inspirational advice during a question and answer session before joining in with a kids versus adults dodgeball match. Mr Jones  said “It was a pleasure to be part of the day. You guys did an awesome job and the kids loved it.”

“Follow Your Dreams would like to say a massive thank you to the Students, Young Ambassadors, and staff from Neath Port Talbot college, who were so impressive in coaching the pupils through the activities.” Continues Ms Whitaker. “We’d also like to say a big thank you to Simon Jones, Darren Thomas and their colleagues at Ultimate Cricket who so kindly gave up their time to meet with the children and make the day extra special. I hope the workshop will help to inspire the pupils to aim high and achieve in sport.”
