A new business has been launched in South Wales by two former finance leaders of multi-national companies. Directors Darren Edwards and Chris Thomas set up SME Finance Partners to put the years of experience they’ve gained within industry to good use by providing flexible finance support to small and medium sized businesses.
Both graduates from Cardiff University, Edwards and Thomas went on to qualify as accountants, gaining extensive experience with large blue-chip firms in senior financial roles. Edwards has held positions in the UK and Europe with Calsonic and Johnson & Johnson, whilst Thomas started his career with British American Tobacco before going on to become Divisional Finance Director at Hargreaves Services.
“We are both proud Welshmen with our roots based in South Wales.” says Thomas, 39. “For the last few years we both travelled a great deal with our previous employers, and we were keen to use the skills that we had gained to set up our own business for the benefit of SME’s throughout South Wales. SME’s are the bedrock of the Welsh economy, and are critical to the country’s economic and social prosperity, this played a large part in our decision to set up our business.”
“I’m finding it highly rewarding.” says Edwards, 39. “The personal gratification of building a company and helping others to achieve goals within their businesses is a great feeling. We have recently started trading and having now moved into our new premises, we are looking to bring additional business on board. We help businesses with all aspects of their finances, ranging from cash flow management and funding requirements, through to profit improvement and business strategy. The businesses that we are working with are already feeling the benefit of having an industry experienced, commercially minded Finance Director on board.”
The company is based in Miskin near J34 of the M4 providing easy access to Swansea and Llanelli to the west, Newport to the east, with close proximity to Cardiff, Bridgend and the Valleys.
“We are in the process of recruiting a bookkeeper to help our clients as we are seeing a great deal of demand in this area” continues Thomas. “In the longer term we are eager to bring in additional Finance Professionals to grow the business. We are also keen to mentor the next generation of talent and are actively developing relations with local Universities to offer students placements to gain relevant work experience as part of their studies, with the ultimate aim of supporting talented individuals to pursue their professional accountancy exams.”
The company provides a flexible outsourced finance function to small and medium sized businesses which is tailored to their own, specific needs. This gives business owners access to a range of high calibre finance skills, ranging from a Finance Director providing strategic input and guidance, through to a bookkeeper to help with basic day to day requirements. The resources are available at a fraction of the cost of taking on full time employees to cover the roles within a small business.
