Church Village charity Follow Your Dreams made a young girl’s dream come true by arranging a meeting with her hero, Welsh rugby player Mike Phillips in Penarth.
Amy Johnston who is from Cardiff, has several learning disabilities. She first met Mike Phillips when she was one year old at the University Hospital of Wales. She has a very special teddy bear that she takes along with her to hospital visits who she has named Mike Phillips.
Mike Phillips, who is a Patron for Follow Your Dreams, said: “Having worked closely with Follow Your Dreams over the past year, I was humbled that Amy’s dream was to meet me. She is a lovely girl and I really enjoyed meeting her.”
Follow Your Dreams arranged the surprise meeting for Amy at The Blue Pelican Café at Hamptons in Penarth. Hamptons were very keen to support the charity and sponsored the afternoon tea for the meeting. Amy sat next to Mike and spent the whole time chatting and asking him lots of questions. Amy was presented with a personalised shirt and a signed ball, which was kindly donated by the Welsh Shop in Treforest. Amy’s mum, Hilary Johnston said, “In Amy’s words ‘That was the best day of my life.”
Amy decided that she wanted to help other children follow their dreams, and on Friday 11th July she wore odd socks to school to fundraise and raise awareness. She is hoping to raise £200.
